Math Studies
Daily Warm-Ups
At the start of class, there will be a warm-up activity posted for you to do. You will be given approximately five minutes to finish the activity. Warm-ups will be done on the student whiteboards and discussed in class. I expect all students to attempt the warm-ups.
Notes
Being in the habit of taking good notes will help you by being a resource to look back at as you study for assessments, work on the homework and learning the material. Notes should include not only what is written on the board, but questions you have and additional comments that will help you understand later what was discussed. Any days you are absent, you should copy the notes from a classmate or Google Classroom.
Practice
There will be daily homework that will be due the following class block. Homework should be done neatly, in pencil, with all work shown for full credit. No work from the current unit will be accepted once the unit project has been assigned. It is expected that you check your answers with the student solution guide.
Logic Puzzles
One of the skills of this class is developing and honing logical thinking and reasoning. To help, we will have bi-weekly logic puzzle sets. After grading, you are welcomed and encouraged to correct the mistakes you made.
Projects
Part of the beauty of math is that is is universal to any topic of discussion. We do not often see this when we are doing the things we love (unless you are like me and your love IS mathematics). AS such, we will be doing projects over the course of the year that will highlight different strands of mathematics, related to our class, that many students sadly do not get to experience. Some of the projects will be short term projects that will usually take place during class, while other long term projects(no more than once per quarter) will be done primarily outside of class.
These projects, both short and long term, are designed to help you better understand mathematics. For long term projects, the information and handouts for the project will be listed on Google Classroom.
Projects will be assigned both individually (primarily done outside of class) and in small groups (primarily done in class). Generally you will be working on an individual and a group project simultaneously throughout the year.
Latework and Reassessment
Timely submission of assignments and/or reassessments is essential for student learning and success. Students are expected to submit their work by the due date. However, understanding that unforeseen circumstances may arise, a grading period of no more than one week beyond the due date is allowed for late submissions with no penalty to the grade. Reassessment should be scheduled within one week of the original assessment date. In cases of extended absences due to illness, family emergencies, or other significant circumstances, students or parents should contact the teacher, counselor, or principal as soon as possible to discuss alternative arrangements and extended deadlines.
